چکیده

METHODS Patients Pleural fluids from 374 patients meeting standard criteria for pleural infection were analysed. Patients were recruited in 52 UK centres between 1999 and 2008 (including mycoplasma peak periods), as part of previous randomized trials of intrapleural therapy in pleural infection. Inclusion criteria were clinical evidence of infection and pleural fluid that was macroscopically purulent, positive on culture for bacterial infection, or positive for bacteria on Gram’s staining, or pleural fluid that had a pH of less than 7.2 (measured using a blood-gas analyser). Evidence of infection, which was assessed by the recruiting physician, included the presence of fever and elevated serum levels of inflammatory markers such as Creactive protein or an elevated white-cell count. Pleural fluid was stored at -80°C prior to analysis.

Microbial and Antibiotic Susceptibility Profiles among Pleural Effusion Exudative Samples

Background and Objectives:Infection of pleural fluid is a common disease and because of antibiotic administration, the microbiology of this fluid has changed. The aim of this study was to determine the common bacteria and suitable antibiotics for treatment in pleural effusion (PE). Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional study, 1210 samples with exudative features were cultured for p...

Blood culture bottle culture of pleural fluid in pleural infection.

BACKGROUND Pleural infection is common, and has a >30% major morbidity and mortality-particularly when infection is caused by Gram-negative, Staphylococcus aureus or mixed aerobic pathogens. Standard pleural fluid culture is negative in ∼40% of cases. Culturing pleural fluid in blood culture bottles may increase microbial yield, and is cheap and easy to perform. OBJECTIVES To determine whethe...

Pleural Infection and Empyema

Increasing incidence of pleural infection has been reported worldwide in recent decades. The pathogens responsible for pleural infection are changing and differ from those in community acquired pneumonia. The main treatments for pleural infection are antibiotics and drainage of infected pleural fluid. The efficacy of intrapleural fibrinolytics remains unclear, although a recent randomized contr...
